ARCHOS is a pioneer in Android tablets, portable audio and video player market that has repeatedly revolutionized the consumer electronics market since 1988. Today, ARCHOS offers Android Tablets, Tablet PCs, Smartphones and MP3/MP4 players.

General

What's an MP3 file?
MP3 is the abbreviation of MPEG-1/2 Audio Layer 3. It is the most common audio file format that contains audio information such as music or voice. It is a compression/decompression audio format offering CD quality but taking up much less memory space.

What is DRM?
DRM (Digital Rights Management) is a system of solutions created and designed as a means to control the unauthorized duplication and illegal distribution of copyrighted digital media. Often, when you buy music on the Internet, it is a DRM file. This allows only the purchaser of the song to play it. If you have such purchased music on your computer and would like to transfer it to your ARCHOS 105, you will need to use Windows Media Player to 'Synchronize' it to the 105. Merely copying it and pasting it into the 105 in Windows Explorer will not allow it to play on the 105.

How can I lock/unlock the buttons on my ARCHOS?
To lock the button, hold down on the MENU button until a padlock icon appears in the top-left corner of the screen.
This will not affect the volume control.
To unlock the buttons, hold down on the MENU button until the padlock icon disappears.

Installation

Do I need any drivers to connect my ARCHOS to my computer with the USB cable?
You do not need any drivers to plug your ARCHOS to your computer. ARCHOS products have been designed to be automatically recognized by recent operating systems.
ATTENTION: ARCHOS devices are NOT supported by old operating systems such as Win95, Win98, Win98se, WinNT, as well as older Mac versions.
When connecting your ARCHOS to your computer, your device will be recognized and connected depending on which version of Windows Media Player you have.
- If you connect your ARCHOS to your PC and it has Windows Media Player 10 or higher installed, it will connect (default connection mode) as a ‘Media Device’ and allow purchased music and videos to be synchronized to your ARCHOS.
- If you connect your device to your PC and you have an older Windows Media Player version on your computer (Media Player 9 or lower), the unit will automatically switch to Hard Drive Mode. Protected music and videos from your PC cannot be synchronized to your ARCHOS in this mode.
Note 1: Macintosh and Linux computers will always connect in ‘Hard Drive’ mode.
Note 2: You might receive a message saying that your unit is not compatible. You can proceed and click on 'Continue'. ARCHOS products are fully compatible with the recent Windows and Macintosh operating systems.

Batteries / Power

Can I replace the battery on my ARCHOS?
No, the device does not have a removable battery.
If you think you have a battery issue, please contact our Technical Support.

Is there a power adapter I can use to charge my ARCHOS?

This device is normally charged using the USB cable connected to a running computer. If a computer is not available, there are adapters available on the market that plug into the wall or into a car cigarette lighter and have a USB connection to charge USB devices. Archos cannot be held responsible if such charger does not provide the standard USB voltage and current thus damaging your Archos.

Music

Which audio files can my played by the ARCHOS?
• MP3, (30 to 320 kbits/s)
• WAV,
• WMA and protected WMA(DRM).
These are standard Microsoft audio file types.
Note: AAC (Apple format), Real Audio and Ogg Vorbis audio formats are not recognised by ARCHOS devices.

My player won't play my wma files, a message comes up saying 'xxx file is not supported', what am I doing wrong?
If you bought this song from a music website, you have to use Windows Media Player 10 or higher to transfer (Synchronize) the music to the 105 device. Use will use the Sync tab.

Copy protected songs (WMA DRM) cannot be just Copy/Pasted to your Archos Device in Windows Explorer.

I just copied some music files on my device, and when I play them I cannot see the album art. What’s the problem?

There are two methods to get album art to show on your ARCHOS 105. Either make sure that you have an APIC incorporated into each music file or make sure that there is a jpeg image in the same folder as your music file. The second method being valid when your device is in Windows Media mode (this is the default out-of-box mode). The former can be done by editing the tags of the file using Windows Media Player or another music tagging third party software.

We suggest that you don’t use images bigger than 128x128 pixels.

How much music can I store on the ARCHOS?
With the 2GB Flash memory, you can store up to 1,000 songs*.
The amount of songs you can store on your device will vary depending on the size, bitrate, resolution and the encoding quality of your files.
*On average, the audio capacity is based on 3.5 mins/song & a 64 kbits/s WMA encoding.

Photo

How can I get photos from my computer onto the Archos 105?

Transferring Photos in Hard Disk Mode

Transferring Photos using Windows Explorer

- connect your Archos 105 to your computer.

- on your computer, locate the pictures you want to transfer, select them and copy them (right click > copy).

- open ‘My Computer’ and double click on the Archos 105 icon

- open the Pictures folder paste your pictures there (right click > paste).

Note that your photos must go into the Pictures folder if you want to be able to view them directly on your Archos.

Transferring Photos with Windows Media Player

- In your media library, locate the pictures you want to transfer, select them and put them into the sync list(right click > add to sync list).

- Click on the button 'Start Synchronization' in the Synchronize panel.

Video

How can I get videos onto my Archos 105?
You will need to use Windows Media Player*. Because the Archos must have small sized video files, the typical files you find on the internet are either too big or not in the right file format. Open Windows Media Player and click on the Sync tab. Drag the desired video files into the sync list panel. Once there, click the button on the bottom 'Syncronize now'. Windows Media Player will now start converting your files to a smaller size and into the correct format that your Archos 105 can play. The 105 plays video files of type WMV9 which are smaller than 160x128 pixel resolution. *you must be using the default connection mode 'Windows Device' for this to work properly.

Troubleshooting

My ARCHOS stops/blocks while playing. What should I do?

1. First, make sure the device's battery is charged.

2. Shut off the device and then turn it back on again.

3. If the device has been set to Mass Storage mode, can connect it to your PC and perform a Scan Disk operation.

4. You can reset the device by holding down on the x 'Off' button for 15 seconds.

My ARCHOS will not turn on.
It may be that the battery needs to be recharged. Plug the included USB cable into a running computer and the other end to the ARCHOS 105. When the ARCHOS turns on, select “Charge only”, and let it charge for a few hours. On rare occasions, the Archos can get a false shutdown and not want to start back up again. This can be remedied by holding down on the x “Off” button for 15 seconds (while not connected to the computer). This is how one resets the 105. Now turn on your 105 as normal. To make sure this false ‘shutdown’ does not block you again, you should update your ARCHOS to the latest software (firmware) by going to the Archos web site and downloading it to your device. Go to www.archos.com/support/download/firmware.html.

(Redirected from Archos 04 Series)

Archos Generation 4 were a series of Archosportable media players released from 2006 through 2007. The Generation 4 series is an upgrade to the previous AV and Gmini series, primarily the AV500s. There are 8 models in all. All players are Microsoft PlaysForSure compatible.

Archos employed a philosophy of producing a modular player, making the standard 04 unit base price cheaper with the option of adding on additional features for additional costs. Using the DVR Station or the DVR Travel Adapter, each unit can record from TV and other standard video sources. The DVR Station and DVR Travel Adapter are not included with the units and must be purchased separately.

Features[edit]

DVR Station[edit]

The DVR station (Digital video recorder) is available as an optional accessory for the 4th Gen players and allows the user to Record TV or other video sources such as satellite/cable box, VCR, DVD player or camcorder in MPEG-4 format. You can record instantaneously or make scheduled recordings using a program built into the players.

The DVR station also allows you to turn the players into camcorders by connecting most digital cameras into the DVR station or you can the optional Archos helmet camera. It records the video directly on the 30 GB hard drive in MPEG-4 format.

Criticism[edit]

The Generation 4 products are often criticized for charging for accessories and audio and video codec support that originally came packaged with the last generation AV series players. These include the DVR capabilities, and support for files such as MPEG-1. Not all video codecs work right out of the box. Each unit is capable of playing MPEG-2/VOB videos with Dolby 5.1 Sound (AC3) sound and H.264 videos with AAC sound, however separate plugins must be purchased to unlock these capabilities.

The 604 WiFi has been criticized for its somewhat slow web-browser and lower screen quality in comparison to the 604. The latter is the effect of adding the touchscreen which required the screen to be matte rather than glossy.

The 504 has received some issues with static electricity problems.

The 404 Camcorder has received positive reviews for its wide range of features and low price, however the unit has also been criticised for a low quality image for still shots, comparable to a cell phone.[1]

Versions[edit]

Portable Video[edit]

604[edit]

The 604 is the flagship model, and the main successor to the AV500. Features include a 30 GB HDD, a 4.3 inch, 16:9 aspect ratio widescreen WQVGA screen, a removable battery, a kickstand, and the ability to record video and audio from line-in sources (via the optional docking station or travel adapter), or the included microphone. It is thinner than the 504, and about the same thickness as the 404 and 404 camcorder. The screen is glossy unlike the 604 WiFi and the 404, which have semi-matte finishes. The 604 family uses the Texas Instruments DaVinci DM644x processor.[2]

604 WiFi[edit]

The Archos 604 WiFi is a touch-screen multimedia player which also provides access to the Internet. It has the full capabilities of the standard 604 with the added built in Wi-Fi, touchscreen, and a web browser. The touchscreen required the screen to have a matte finish and the Wi-Fi module adds an extra stub to the unit's side. It is otherwise identical to the 604.

Drivers ARCHOS 104

The 604 WiFi uses the 802.11gWi-Fi connection and features the Opera 8.5 web browser. This allows for full internet browsing. The surfing experience on the ARCHOS 604 WiFi is further enhanced by Opera's Medium Screen Rendering (MSR) technology to change the page to suit the 4.3 inch screen. The Wi-Fi capabilities also lets the device act as a file server and connecting the device to a home network to transfer files or play content directly from the network. While the device has no other native Internet software such as an e-mail client, some forms of e-mail and instant messaging may be accessed via the browser if that software is browser compatible. The Opera implementation currently lacks Adobe Flash capability or a Java virtual machine but does support JavaScript.

704 WiFi[edit]

The 704 WiFi operates similar to the 604 WiFi but with a 7-inch screen that has a resolution of 800x480 (WVGA). The side buttons have also been removed as the touch screen becomes the main means of navigation. This is the follow-up to the AV700. The processor used is reported by third parties as a Texas Instruments DM420 (a technology neighbor to the early members of the DaVinci family, the likely full name probably is DM320DM420DSC; that was seemingly only available to selected customers).[3]

704 TV[edit]

A modified 704 released in France only where the integrated Wi-Fi is replaced with a TV Tuner. This is the follow-up to the AV700TV.

504[edit]

Archos 504

The 504 is positioned as a bigger, thicker model with large amounts of storage in comparison to the 604. It is available in 40 GB, 80 GB or 160 GB capacities, and has a removable battery. It retains all of the 604's features. Unlike the 604, removing the battery exposes the 504's 2.5-inch harddrive. Users have reported successfully upgrading the harddrive themselves. However, this ability has been cut off in firmware version 1.5 and later, but the users have been able to install the older firmware. The 504 uses the Texas Instruments DaVinci DM644x processor.[4]

404[edit]

Designed to be the budget level PVP, the 404 was created as a smaller version of the 604. The 404 retains many of the same features and all accessories and plug-ins for the 604 are also compatible. The major difference is the screen. It is shortened to 3.5 inches and is not wide. The screen has a QVGA resolution and 24-bit color. The unit has 30 GB of storage and a voice recorder microphone. The main market point from Archos was that it was similar in size to comparably priced PMPs but has about twice the screen size (by area compared to 2.5 inches). The 404 family uses the Texas Instruments DaVinci DM644x processor.[5]

404 Camcorder[edit]

Drivers Archos 104 Plus

A variation of the standard 404, adding a 1.3 MP camera on the back to take stills images and video recordings. It also includes all the features of the standard 404. While it is the only one of the series to have the camera built-in, the other players can use the 'helmet cam' accessory for similar operation. It is the follow-up of the Gmini 402 Camcorder.

Portable Audio[edit]

204[edit]

The device has 20 GB of storage. It supports no video playback. The display is an OLED type with 1.8' and a color depth of 3x6 bit. Other features are the same as for the Archos Gmini XS 202 that comes with a 2' gray scale display.

GPL code release[edit]

In order to comply with the GNU/Linux license (the GPL), the source code for some of the firmware in the 4th Generation players has been released.[6]

QTopia[edit]

The 605 WiFi, along with, reportedly, the 705 WiFi and 604 WiFi, were successfully hacked to run the Linux platform QTopia with help from the same users who had done so on the older PMA400.[7]
